Thinking About Project 2: Image and Text

Project 2: Image and Text involves using prescribed text (see attachment in Blackboard) and images that you find or make that you will fit onto an 11"h x17"w spread as a magazine article.

I have provided the copy in a Word document with some formatting that should give you some indication of the hierarchy of information; it is up to you to set the type in a pleasing way, and to find appropriate imagery to accompany the article. You must use at least one image in this assignment, taking into consideration things like resolution and size, which we will talk more about soon.

I'd recommend reading the article you choose in full before sitting down to start designing. You need to know what you're designing to!

I'd also like to suggest that you do a little research and reading about using the grid as you're designing this type of layout. This article addresses that and many other good points you should have in the back of your mind as you plan and work. Also think back to our friend Wim Crouwel (the "gridnik") from our viewing of the film Helvetica, and the grid system he developed for himself that became the basis for all his design work.

This PDF should be helpful to better understand how the grid makes organizing information easier.

More examples of how you can make grids of all types work for you.

THIS, though? This is super classy and a must-read.

I hope you enjoy this project! Feel free to share your works in progress with me either on your blog or via email. Stay tuned for updates.
